Stage 6, North Star Grand Prix

The final stage! Not only was it the final stage but it was probably one of the hardest especially after racing for almost a week.

This crit was truly one of a kind. A figure 8 loop with no overlap to be exact. With the start at the base of a 400 metre climb that rounded out to an average gradient of 18% this stage was nothing to underestimate.

The race started and immediately at the top of the climb there was a sprint stringing out the pack right away. Without any call ups for the team it made it even harder for the Jet Fuel boys to move up to the ideal top 20 positions especially when it would bottle neck at the top of the climb from too many riders attempting to squeeze into a tight left hand turn.

After this steep and I emphasize steep climb the course continued to ascend resulting in the race continuing to single out. At about the half way mark in the course you would then hit the downhill section. Man was that nice.

Back to the race…After about the 5th lap the race began to blow up. Riders falling off the back and leaving gaps causing others to jump around them and try to get back on. After 4 days of racing I was pretty cooked and I didn’t have much top end left.

Peter Disera, the strong man, managed to hang in there until two laps to go and finish right on the back of the lead pack.

To conclude, North Star GP was an excellent experience for me. Although I was not nearly where I would have like to place I still enjoyed the learning curve and the very intense racing!
